This afternoon presentation, organised by the CIHT Yorkshire & the Humber Emerging Professionals group, will explore the careers of highways and transportation professionals. The speakers will cover their career path, their reflections and share tips for managing challenges. This is an opportunity to gain insight into the various opportunities in the Transport and Highways industry.

Over the course of an hour we will explore the careers of two highways and transportation professionals. Covering the speaker’s career path, their reflections on key skills, attributes and experiences that have been important for their careers as well as sharing any tips for managing challenges emerging and aspiring professionals may face in their own careers.
The event will showcase the many routes and options available for a career in the Highways and Transportation sector, the challenges those in the sector may face in the future and inspire younger professionals in their own career.
This event is primarily for emerging professionals (in the first 10 or so years of their career), although this event will be insightful and interesting for anyone looking to progress in their career and considering the best way to do so.
Anna Vickers, Associate Transport Planner at Arup
Anna is one of Arup’s Aimsun microsimulation experts and is part of the management team of the firm’s microsimulation skills network. Anna has developed and delivered six 3-day Aimsun microsimulation training courses to over 30 Arup staff around the globe and UK Local Authority clients.
Aside from Aimsun microsimulation modelling, Anna has over twenty years’ experience of transport modelling; including VISSIM and S-Paramics microsimulation; Saturn and CUBE strategic assignment modelling; and using models to produce supporting evidence for business cases.
Recently Anna has been responsible for the delivery of several outline business cases for schemes within the Sheffield City Region that have been modelled using microsimulation. This required development of innovative methodologies for using microsimulation outputs for economic appraisal, and collaborative working with the Local Authorities and SCR.
Jeremy Bloom, Transport Consultant and Development Coach at Jeremy Bloom Consulting Ltd and Bloom Development Coaching
Jeremy is an independent transport consultant and development coach, with 30 years’ experience of identifying, developing and delivering strategies, projects and programmes, most recently as Network Planning Director with Highways England.
Prior to that, he established and led HE’s £9bn Regional Investment Programme during the first Roads period, during which time he also delivered Highways England’s first Development Consent Order project. Earlier in his career, Jeremy was involved in some of the country’s flagship projects in roles for London Underground and Network Rail, and he has since been a keen advocate for multimodal solutions to transport problems.
Jeremy’s focus now is on helping organisations to solve some of their difficult transport challenges and, as a development coach, to support the next generation of transport professionals in progressing their careers.
