Following the introduction of this Act in 2010, local authorities are given new duties to deal with flooding in their areas. The meeting will be in 2 parts. Linda as Head of Strategic Environmental Delivery and lead on the delivery of the Flood and Water Management Act for Hampshire County Council will give the perspective of the County Council in their role as lead local authority under the Act, and how they are discharging their duties. Linda is a chartered member of the Landscape Institute and Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. She heads a group of environmental specialists at Hampshire County Council delivering environmental initiatives, information and advice. She led the development of the County Council’s highways policy responding to the Department of Transport’s Manual for Streets guidance (2007)


Andy, from CH2M HILL’s urban water planning team in Swindon will talk about the types of flooding, including highways, surface water, river and groundwater flooding.  He will describe the consequences of the different types of flooding, and talk about the various responses from his experience to reduce or mitigate the negative impacts of flooding.  Andy will also include a few examples of different responses to flooding, including retrofitting SUDS and temporary responses to flooding such as property level protection. Andy McConkey is a chartered water and environment manager and a member of CIWEM, with over 14 years experience in water management.  He is team leader for CH2M HILL’s urban water planning team in Swindon, and has been project manager of a number of local flood risk management strategies, including the Hampshire Local Flood Risk Management Strategy, and has overseen a number of schemes to reduce or mitigate the impacts of flooding.
