Since the mid-1990s there has been a decline in car use among young adults, especially among young men. It is important to understand the factors associated with young adults’ driving behaviour, since this age group may be leading a trend away from car use.

One in five young drivers (17-24 year-olds) will have an accident within six months of passing their test. Novice young drivers are at particular risk because of their lack of experience and also the biological and behavioural characteristics of youth. Young drivers make up 25% of all those drivers killed or seriously injured on the roads annually, but only account for 8% of licence holders. They also drive less than older licence holders.

Yet the evidence shows that risk reduces quickly as experience is gained. Studies have found that the first 1,000 miles of driving may be the most important in terms of reducing collision risk.

This presentation will outline the individual, household and local area level characteristics associated with driving behaviour in the UK among young adults aged 17-34. It will also highlight the extent to which similar trends have taken place amongst pre-driving age young people (ages 11 to 16) and what bearing these trends might have on the safety of young people on the road. Current evidence on young driver safety, the policy environment and ‘what works’ will be described and the presenter will argue that the current learning-to-drive training, testing and licensing regime is not doing enough to prepare our nation’s young people for solo driving.

This technical event is recognised as CPD by CIHT. You can record your CPD onmycareerpath, an on-line recording system which is free to use for CIHT members and can be accessed via MyCIHT.
