This talk will provide the opportunity to hear from members of the Glasgow Motorway History Archive about the story of Glasgow's motorway system from 1945 to the completion of the M74 in 2011.
The collection of records associated with the history and construction of the motorways and major roads of Glasgow, including photos and footage, will be shared to tell the story of the most extensive urban motorway system of any UK city. There will be a specific focus on features that make the system unique from a traffic and civil engineering point of view.
The Glasgow Motorway History Archive is a non-profit, independent organisation dedicated to the collection and preservation of records associated with the history and construction of the motorways and expressways of Glasgow. The organisation seeks to increase awareness of this crucial piece of Glasgow’s post-war infrastructure, one of the largest civil engineering projects in the city during the 20th century.
Engineers and transport planners who want to hear more about the urban road network around Glasgow and the history to how the road network of today came about.

Stuart Baird, Glasgow Motorway Archive Chair
Stuart Baird is a Chartered Civil Engineer, employed within the Scottish Government. Stuart founded the Glasgow Motorway Archive in 2010 to ensure records relating to the construction of Scotland’s post-war roads were secured for the future. He has co-authored technical papers on the subject of the Glasgow motorway system and works closely with a number of academic institutions and public bodies. He has a keen interest in post-war civil engineering and architecture.
John Hassall, Glasgow Motorway Archive Secretary
John Hassall is a civil engineer, employed within the roads maintenance sector in Scotland. John joined the Glasgow Motorway Archive in 2013 and has worked to develop its presence on social media, He has co-presented a number of events, most recently during Glasgow Doors Open Days. He has a keen interest in highway link design, particularly grade separated junction design.
