Health and Transport - the role transport has to play in a healthy society

A Greater London Branch event

Date: Wednesday 26th November 2014

Venue Committee Room 1, Greater London Authority, City Hall, The Queen's Walk, London, SE1 2AA

Time 6.00 for 6.30 start

Subject: Health & Transport - the role transport has to play in a healthy society

Description

The costs of poor health to society both in economic and social terms is well known, but what is becoming increasingly clearer is the important role transport provision and planning has to play in promoting health. With the recent changes where local authorities become responsible for both health and transport, this potentially provides opportunities for 'joined-up' provision.

This talk will look at transport and health from two perspectives. Lucy Saunders from the GLA will discuss the Mayor's policy of health promotion through transport, and Phil Jones from Phil Jones Associates will discuss an example of where such policies have actually been implemented with the Welsh Active Travel Act, which will come into force shortly .

Speakers

Lucy Saunders is a Consultant in Public Health working for the Greater London Authority and Transport for London. Lucy has a unique role integrating public health considerations into policy and practice in the transport sector across London.

Phil Jones  has over 25 years experience in the planning and design of development infrastructure, with particular expertise in traffic analysis, transport planning and highway design. Phil was part of the team that produced "Manual for Streets" & "Manual for Streets 2 and was the editor for the Welsh Government's Active Travel Design Guidelines .
