Setting high benchmarks for health and safety, and holding projects to them, saves lives.

The Institution of Civil Engineers’ is holding its first Constructing Health and Safety conference next month. The speaking programme has been crafted to bring together the foremost examples of best practice in the field.  The high profile speakers included exemplify the intent to share and learn.

They represent a variety of projects, both large and small, and to a person are invested in furthering health, safety and wellbeing. They include: Peter Hansford, Government’s Chief Construction Adviser; Andy Mitchell, Chief Executive Officer, Thames Tideway Tunnel; Anthony Lees, Head of Construction Policy Unity, Health and Safety Executive; Lawrence Waterman, Head of Health and Safety, ODA & LLDC; Professor Dame Carol Black, Expert Advisor on Health and Work, Department of Health; and many more.

Andy Mitchell explained his involvement:
“Health is central to the Thames Tideway Tunnel – ensuring a healthier river for future generations. But in a different way, it is also fundamental in the construction of the tunnel itself. On a project as large and complex as ours, it is essential that we get our health and safety standards right.  Learning from other projects such as London 2012 and Crossrail, we are developing a framework which will build upon the best practice of our predecessors. We are looking to raise standards still further and deliver a transformational performance that will set a new benchmark for our industry.  The ICE Conference will be an excellent opportunity to explain more about what this looks like and, at this early stage in the Thames Tideway Tunnel lifespan, explore other opportunities for raising the bar even further. “

CIHT members should select the ‘Supporting association’ option when booking a place to receive a discounted rate. For more information and to book your place visit www.ice-healthandsafety.com
