IHT Southern Branch Fun Day

This event, jointly hosted by the Master of Paviors, Andrew Panter and the President of the Institution of Highways & Transportation, David Tarrant, takes place at Amberley Museum & Heritage Centre on Saturday 9th May 2009.

Please see the Fun Day Event Programme

Members of  IHT and their families are invited to attend and benefit from a reduced price * /free entry available on presentation of their IHT Membership Card on arrival at the entrance booking office or for free entry by pre-registration via the IHT Southern Branch. Please email the name of Southern Branch member as leader, and names of those accompanying, to Len Parker by 5th May 2009. In order to aid logistical planning for the day’s activities please identify which names refer to children.

The event is one of the series taking place nationwide and hosted by various Engineering Institutions in celebration of UK Motorways 50th Anniversary. You are invited to bring a picnic lunch or make use of Amberley’s restaurant facilities and this year we have use of the Friends’ Centre close to the Paviors Pavilion.

The Friends’ Centre is also the venue for display of books and documents from the Motorway Archive, AV presentations, some of the scientific activities for children and outside, the exhibit of a modern paver as used in the latest motorway work contrasting with a typical example of an ancient roller. The children will also be given the challenge of laying out a particular type of curve, the significance of which and its relationship to motorway design and construction they will discover during the course of the day.

Chaplain to the Worshipful Company of Paviors, Bernard Metcalfe will lead a short service during the day when he will conduct a re-dedication ceremony for the sculpture ‘Continuum’ that was commissioned to celebrate the life and work of the late Nigel Knott, the former County Surveyor of Hertfordshire and a Past President of the Institution of Highways & Transportation.

Until the move by IHT to their new offices in Britannia Walk the sculpture graced their garden but the new location does not have such facilities. In its new home at Amberley however, it will have greater exposure to public view. Nigel is remembered not only for his outstanding contribution to the development of the motorways but also for his work in the cause of road safety, particularly for cyclists and all users of the transport network. It is hoped that a representative of Sustrans will be present. Nigel’s Widow, Maureen, and her family will attend as guests for the day and look forward to meeting old friends and colleagues. It is hoped that many members of this Institution and the County Surveyors’ Society who worked with Nigel will take the opportunity to be present.
