James Goodwin - Contract Manager VMS, Colas Ltd James Goodwin is a contract manager at Colas, one of the UK’s leading highways contractors, and an Incorporated Engineer based in the East Midlands. A long-standing member of the CIHT since 2016, James also serves on the CIHT East Midlands committee, where he actively champions professional development and inclusivity in the transportation sector. James brings a deeply personal and practical perspective to allyship. As both a parent and a professional, he is committed to challenging outdated assumptions and fostering inclusive conversations—whether in the workplace or at home. From addressing misconceptions about physical capability in engineering roles to advocating for inclusive design and working methods, James believes in engaging with “counter arguments” constructively rather than dismissively. His passion for equity was further ignited by his daughter’s innocent observation that “women don’t go to the gym”—a moment that underscored the subtle cultural messages that shape perceptions from a young age. For James, allyship means being visible, vocal, and prepared to lead by example until representation improves. He believes that “you cannot be what you cannot see,” and that while men can’t replace the need for female role models, their support is essential in driving change. |
