In recognition of IWD (International Women's Day), we will hear from four female highways and transportation professionals. The speakers will share their experience as female professionals in the industry, challenges they have encountered and how they have dealt with them.

Farheen Ahmed, Technical Director (Highways) at Arcadis
Farheen is a chartered engineer with over 18 years’ experience leading large multi-disciplinary teams in the delivery of major highways projects on the National Highways and Local Authority Network.
She is a skilled professional with experience as technical lead as well as Project Manager. She has worked with various consultants and delivered various technically complex projects in collaboration with clients, contractors and other stakeholders ensuring projects are developed accurately, efficiently, are delivered within budget and to programme. She is a huge advocate of collaborative working and always makes sure projects comply with scope, are delivered right first time and meet client’s needs/expectations.
She also works as a STEM ambassador, Vice Chair in school governing board and mentor to graduates, apprentices and professionals, seeking to get professional qualification.
Susan Broadbent, Senior Divisional Director at Jacobs
Susan is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers (FIStructE) and Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (FCIHT). Susan has accumulated three decades of technical expertise and leadership roles on a variety of challenging high-profile infrastructure and building projects in the UK, Asia and Africa. Much of her work over recent years has involved multi-disciplinary transportation schemes with more focus on Highway and Railway Projects in collaboration with clients, contractors and other design disciplines, including leading structural teams.
She has been an active member of CIHT and IStructE for the past few years. Susan is also a member of the judging panels for local Awards as well as National & International Structural Awards. Susan’s abilities lie in recognising what needs to be done and being also ready to do it in a very methodical manner, with a strong work ethic underlying her approach to working with her clients.
Dr Janvi Shah, Head of Asset Management Strategy at National Highways
Dr Janvi Shah is responsible for developing the company’s asset management policy and approach as well as lead the transformation programme which sets out the direction for improving organisation’s maturity.
Prior to joining National Highways, Janvi worked as an asset management consultant supporting various asset intensive organisations in rail, port authorities and utility organisations. Janvi is also a visiting lecturer in University of Birmingham to share the practical industry learnings with academia.
Zoe Smith, Transport Data Lead at West Midlands Combined Authority
Zoe is a EngTech qualified member of CIHT with 13 years’ experience working in both public and private sectors in multi-disciplinary teams in the UK and the Middle East.
Currently the Transport Data Lead at West Midlands Combined Authority providing technical leadership and system expertise to develop new solutions and introduce data-led approaches to projects.
Starting as an Apprentice Civil Engineer, she used the opportunity to work in different functional teams to gain an appreciation and understanding of management, delivery and operational needs and used this experience to move up to senior positions, fostering collaborative working and breaking silos.
She is passionate about the industry and future workforce. As a STEM ambassador, CIHT mentor and GIS Geomentor she works to encourage new entrants to the industry with diverse backgrounds and experience, while upskilling the current workforce too.
