The recent landmark public realm improvements at the historic heart of Kingston Town Centre aim to ensure that the Kingston Ancient Market Place achieves its full potential and attracts more businesses while, creating a more pleasant environment for all: businesses, pedestrians, visitors, cyclists and local residents.
· The scheme promotes a variety of radical public realm designs including: New Market stalls for day and evening use.
· New shared space pavements using high quality natural stones (setts and slabs)
· Creative lighting to showcase the market place
· New street furniture which looks great & works well.
· Remove street clutter so that the space is flexible.
· New drainage network including improving existing drainage.
· Creative solution to manage market waste.
The continued success of Kingston as a regional retail and business centre comes from a willingness to keep evolving to provide what people want on their High Street. With support from the Mayor’s Outer London Fund, Kingston Council has worked very closely with a number of partners to create an exciting new destination at the historic heart of Kingston.
The scheme has recently won the prestigious Great British High Street Award 2014 award and is well worth a visit. The visit will include a brief presentation of the project by the Project Manger and Resident Engineer of the Scheme from Royal Borough of Kingston Up on Thames followed by a site visit, providing an opportunity to see the project first hand and discuss the project with those involved.
