BEDFORD: Get the latest information and your questions answered on the Luton DART (Direct Air-Rail Transit). Scheduled to open in 2021, passengers will be able to travel between St Pancras and London Luton Airport in just 30 minutes using the fastest trains and seamless Luton DART transfer.
Phil Hobson, Project Director at Volker Fitzpatrick Kier, responsible for overseeing construction of the Luton DART and Paolo Perugini, Senior Engineer at Arup London, ed the DART civil and structural design from the project inception through planning and procurement will provide unmissable insight into the project.
The £225m Luton DART (Direct Air-Rail Transit) will speed travellers from Luton Airport Parkway station to the terminal of London Luton Airport in well under four minutes. The project is being funded and delivered by Luton Council’s airport company, London Luton Airport Ltd (LLAL). Scheduled to open in 2021, the scheme will enable passengers to travel between St Pancras and London Luton Airport in just 30 minutes using the fastest trains and seamless Luton DART transfer. The scheme will be a double-shuttle, fully-automated people-mover, based on the latest system technology and design innovation, capable of operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The cable-driven system is energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

Phil Hobson, Project Director at Volker Fitzpatrick Kier
Phil is Volker Fitzpatrick Kier’s Project Director, responsible for overseeing construction of the Luton DART. Phil brings over 30 years’ experience of construction knowledge to the project and with so much complexity, every ounce of that experience has been used to keep it on Track (Pun Intended). Phil will deliver a behind the scenes view of the largest construction contract in Luton council’s history and some of the more interesting aspects of how to build a 100th scale model of HS2 inside London Luton Airport.
Paolo Perugini, Senior Engineer at Arup London
Paolo is a Senior Engineer at Arup London. He led the DART civil and structural design from the project inception through planning and procurement. Paolo will bring his unique insight of the project from the perspective of the Designer - outlining some of the many engineering challenges and describing the ‘definition design’ strategy implemented on the project.
