The introduction of vegetable based binders as an alternative to bitumen has tended to spark many people’s imagination because of their very low carbon footprint. This presentation will give an example of such a binder and describe its use in downstream mixtures and treatments. Uniquely, the binder is also available as an emulsion resulting in impressive reductions in greenhouse gas emission.

John Richardson is head of technical services to Colas for their operations in Great Britain and the Isle of Man. He had spent 23 years with George Wimpey Company involved with quality control, quality management, research & development and overseas contracting. He then transferred to Tarmac Quarry Products following a company asset swap where he spent 4 years mainly involved in design and evaluation of pavements, before joining Colas Ltd in 2000. He is a member of various committees of trade associations and standards-making bodies.
