This event, organised by CIHT North East & Cumbria, will be held in-person at The Fire Station, Middlesbrough Town Hall. It will involve a talk on the development and use of the “Middlesbrough Transport Model” in Middlesbrough. The model was initially developed in 2019 and combines macroscopic assignment and microsimulation subnetworks and has assisted in shaping future transport and development across the Local Authority area.
This talk will be based on the development and use of the “Middlesbrough Transport Model” in Middlesbrough. The model was initially developed in 2019 and combines macroscopic assignment and microsimulation subnetworks and has assisted in shaping future transport and development across the Local Authority area.
The approach to developing the model mirrors that of other innovative models developed by Fore, including models of Stockton-on-Tees, Medway, Wakefield, Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford. The current model includes over 100 traffic signal controller specifications, the detailed coding of nearly 400 miles of road network, and an area-wide origin destination matrix with over 40,000 car, LGV and HGV trips.
This approach allows for the strategic understanding of network reassignment and for the detailed local effects of transport schemes to be fully assessed.
The talk will also explore how the use of the model has been and is continued to be used in Middlesbrough, drawing on a number of case studies. This will explore how the model has and continues to support the delivery of some major residential, employment and commercial proposals across the Borough, including a number of flagship schemes backed by Middlesbrough Council.

We would encourage all levels of the industry to attend the event, however it would be particularly useful for those who are involved with highway development control on a day-to-day basis, scheme design and transport appraisal / business case development. The talk will also be useful for those who have a general interest in transportation modelling and, in particular, Aimsun software. We would also welcome those within an academic setting.
It would be of particular interest to a Tees Valley-based audience, including Local Authorities and other regional partnerships such as TVCA. It would also be of interest to other transport professionals within the region, as well as other key non-highway officers at Middlesbrough Council and other neighbouring Local Authorities, such as planners. We would also encourage other transport professionals from local and / or regional transport consultancies to attend, and potentially other regional Local Authorities, such as those in Tyne & Wear.
