Good asset management, value for money and dwindling finances are all today’s key words in our industry. Against this background can we actually attain sustainable highway maintenance? Are we clear what it is hence what we are trying to achieve? The presentation will seek to explore what it is, why we need it and how we might attain it through the good practices that exist, the failures that we see each day, the consequences of not getting it right and what we can do to change things. We will consider problems that have occurred and solutions that can be implemented recognising that highway maintenance is the bedrock of society providing the vital infrastructure for movement yet it certainly is not a sexy subject!
