The 2017 CIHT Northern Ireland Study Tour is to North Italy centred around Venice. As well as the Alps and Dolomites, North Italy is a place full of culture as well as difficult transport infrastructure.
Due to difficult flight times this year’s trip will depart from Dublin airport at 14:00 on 4th May arriving in North Italy that evening. After check in we will be treated to a presentation on the latest infrastructure projects taking place around this area of Italy. This will include an update on the latest work taking place on the geotechnical aspects of the tunnel construction in this part of Italy and a review of some of the challenges facing this area from earthquakes to protecting the transport environment.
Day Two on Friday will see a visit to the Arsenale in Venice. This area is prone to flooding and significant works have taken place to protect the city. Our visit includes a presentation and visit of the MOSE project dealing with the flood defences around Venice. The afternoon will see a visit to the steel dams still to be installed as part of the flood systems to protect the cities transport infrastructure.
Day Three will see a visit to review the connectivity around Italy and the canal system in Venice. Linkages in our own environment are an important element of sustainable transport. Visits will be made to review the public squares and use of materials around the shared spaces. Significant work has taken place on the public transport infrastructure and the connectivity and these will be reviewed to assist in the Northern Ireland debate which is taking place on kerbs, open space and movement of people.
Sunday will be a social day before returning to Treviso airport for a return flight on the evening of 7th May. While there are many attractions to see in the wider area there is so much to see and do in this area of north Italy. I don't think we need to travel further afield.
The total cost will be £385 per person including flights from Dublin Airport, bed and breakfast in Venice, transport and tours. The tour will be limited to 25 people, so book early.
