Paper evening: Climate Change and Sustainable Transport

Tuesday 20 April 2010
6.00 pm for 6.30 pm start

Guest Speakers: John Parry and Kit Mitchell

John Parry and Kit Mitchell will be giving a presentation on sustainable transport and climate change. This is based on the work of the CIHT Sustainable Transport Panel, which produced the document Climate Change and Sustainable Transport – the challenge for professional, available from the members area on the CIHT website.

Kit will cover the scientific background to sustainable transport, covering a number of factors that reduce the sustainability of current transport systems.  These include the depletion of finite stocks of fossil fuels and climate change itself.  He will indicate the scope for mitigating carbon emissions through a mix of technology and behaviour change.  John will describe the ways in which highway engineers will have to adapt to the changing environmental conditions that climate change will bring, and the steps being taken to increase the use of recycled materials in highway construction.

West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence WMCCE
5th Floor, Embassy House
60 Church Street
Birmingham, B3 2DJ

Cost: admission is free

Dr C G B (Kit) Mitchell MA, PhD, FCIHT, FCILT, FRAeS, CEng

Dr Mitchell retired from Transport Research Laboratory in 1994.  In 1970 he had moved from the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, to join the team at the then Road Research Laboratory studying the Cabtrack and Minitram automatic public transport systems. He then managed research on dial-a-bus in Britain and worked with the operators to implement services in Harlow and the West Midlands.

He became Head of Access and Mobility Division in 1975, responsible for research on the effects of transport policies on different groups of people. From 1982 to his retirement he was Head of Environment Divison. From the early 1980s he also ran TRRL’s research on transport for disabled people and led the team that produced the DPTAC specification for local buses. He chaired the committee that recommended noise levels at which drellings should be insulated against noise from new railways. After retirement from TRL, he worked for Transport Canada for a year as a Visiting Expert, advising on the implications of ITS for elderly and disabled travellers.

He has been a member of the Transport Policy Board of the CIHT for many years, and was a member of Council until 2006.  He is a member of the CIHT Panel on Sustainable Transport.  He wrote the CIHT published guidelines "Planning for Public Transport in Development" and "Moving Freight - balancing economy and environment".  More recently, he provided the database of transport statistics for the Institute of Advanced Motorists 'Motoring Facts'.
