Pavement Design using the DMRB

Birmingham

Endorsed by IHT

“Now based on the 2009 revision to IAN 73”

The Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) dictates how the majority of UK highways are designed. The use of this suite is mandatory for operations on Motorways and Trunk Roads. Although these roads represent only around 4% of the road network, they carry some 30% of the total traffic and 50% of heavy goods vehicles. The vast majority of works on the remaining 96% of the road network are designed in accordance with the DMRB. Consequently, where works involving construction of carriageways or maintenance of existing pavements is carried out, Volume 7 Pavement Design & Maintenance is likely to be the controlling document. In addition, many Local Authorities use the DMRB to govern work on their highways. In 2006, the Highways Agency issued new editions of HD 24, HD 25 and HD 26, the Standards that address pavement design. This Course discusses the contents of these documents and gives delegates the opportunity to undertake exercises on all three Standards.

On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:
calculate the Design Traffic for maintenance projects and new road schemes
design foundations in accordance with IAN 73/06
ascertain the thicknesses of the various layers in the pavement
