This presentation summarises a document - Managing Transport Model Development: A Practical Guide. The document describes a simple set of processes and procedures that, once implemented into a transport model development programme, will ensure best practice is followed and a high quality product is achieved.
The idea was initiated by Christopher Mills for TfL’s Major Projects department to evaluate consultant’s model development performance moving towards Public Inquiry. He then expanded it further to apply to the development of TfL’s sub-regional models. He is currently updating it to become a general guide to managers of model development projects on how to plan, test, audit and deliver better quality models.
The document breaks down model development into a series of clear stage gates and details innovative tests and measures to perform in order to ‘pass’ a gate and move on.
Christopher Mills having studied Town and Regional Planning, Christopher initially received practical work experience at a Local Planning Council before being offered a consultancy job in Hong Kong. Ever the adventurer, he took the opportunity and whilst there moved to his now chosen profession of transportation planning. During his 10 years as a consultant, Christopher enjoyed working on a variety of transport planning studies in the UK and around the world; Australia, Asia and the USA. He now works as a Transport Planning Manager for TfL
