Presidential Conference 2009

Conference information and Booking Form
Conference Programme

The Conference
The conference will take place in Manchester on Thursday 24 September 2009. The conference will examine the differing influences and desires, discuss the approaches from a wide range of perspectives, and look at how these demands can be reconciled to address the true needs of a nation.

The speakers at the conference will represent their different approaches to the challenges that are faced in the various regions of the UK and across transport modes. In this way the Institution will bring together key influencers and decision makers to deliver a lively and informative conference that will be of value to everyone involved in transportation infrastructure.

The conference will be held in Manchester’s Town Hall, at the very core of a city with a commercial heritage of which it is rightly proud. The commercial wealth spread throughout the region has also left an architectural legacy in the many historic estates and buildings across the region. It is a modern day city too, with upmarket shopping and arts facilities as well as an enviable sporting history.

Pre-conference Reception and Gala Dinner
Preceding the conference, on Wednesday 23 September, will be a grand gala
dinner, set in the impressive surroundings of the Great Hall, the jewel in the
crown of Manchester’s Town Hall. The hall follows the design of a Flemish
weaving hall; it has a superb ceiling bearing the arms of the principal countries
with which Manchester traded, from America to China.
There will be a drinks reception prior to the dinner giving a chance to meet
and mingle. This will be held in the Sculpture Hall which contains an
impressive collection of statues of great Mancunians. On ascending to the
Great Hall for dinner you will pass across a landing with a delightful mosaic
floor patterned with bees, symbolic of the industry of Manchester and
bordered with stylised cotton flowers.

Partners’ Tour
The success of the region is reflected in the country estates bordering the city and
in the investment into the regeneration of the city itself. The modern architecture
in the main retail areas complements buildings from the commercial past. Trams
now travel alongside the canal network which itself is being opened up to provide
an attractive waterside environment.
The planned tour for accompanying partners during the conference will provide
an opportunity to savour this heritage and to enjoy some of the region’s foods.
