Held at SCI HQ, London, UK
Organised by SCI’s Construction Materials Group in partnership with the Institute of Asphalt Technology & the Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation
In the past, asphalt including recycled material has often been regarded as an inferior product because it contained “second hand” material. More recent experience has shown that the product can be equal to anything produced with all new component materials. Furthermore, the need to consider the sustainability of all our actions has made it critical to relook at the concept. Provided the durability is not impaired by the addition of reclaimed asphalt, then the sustainability must be enhanced. The road (or airfi eld or car park) should be thought of as a giant linear quarry that is in all areas, unlike the natural quarries.
This day’s seminar will run through the main topics that need to be considered in moving to more sustainable construction with recycled asphalt. These topics are ownership and management of planings; dealing with tar in planings; the Environment Agency view of recycling; rejuvenators and correction for binder grade; in-situ recycling; recycling into the surface course; recycling with larger proportions for lower layers; plant needs for recycling and recycling secondary aggregates.
