Led by CIHT London, this webinar will look at the recently completed EU project (MORE: Multi-modal Optimisation of Roadspace in Europe) that has developed processes and tools to help cities comprehensively re-design busy urban streets, to meet current and future policy priorities. Speakers include Peter Jones, Scientific Co-ordinator of the MORE project and Roisin Naughton of Transport for London.
Many of London’s busier streets were reengineered in the 1960s to accommodate the rapid growth in car ownership and use, and have not been substantially redesigned to address current policy priorities: promoting sustainable and active travel, enhancing vitality, liveability and well-being, and supporting carbon reduction policies. Although there are many recent examples of good design practice, much more remains to be done.
This webinar will report on a recently completed EU project (MORE: Multi-modal Optimisation of Roadspace in Europe) that has developed processes and tools to help cities comprehensively re-design busy urban streets, to meet current and future policy priorities. Working with five cities across Europe, the project has developed or refined tools to assist cities in generating design options, actively engaging stakeholders in street redesign exercises, more fully simulating street life, and comprehensively appraising design options.
In the first part of the session, Peter Jones (UCL) will give a general overview of the project’s concepts, principles and processes, conclusions and recommendations; this will be followed by Roisin Naughton (TfL) who will describe in greater detail the work that was carried out in London, as part of MORE.
Peter is Professor of Transport and Sustainable Development, in the Centre for Transport Studies at UCL, and was the Scientific Co-ordinator of the MORE project; he leads an MSc course at UCL on Urban Street Planning and Design. He is a member of the DfT Science Advisory Council and co-chairs its Joint Analysis Development Panel.
Roisin is a Principal City Planner in the City Planning department of Transport for London (TfL), with a primary role to implement the Mayor of London’s Transport Strategy (MTS); providing strategic direction to improve the Capital’s transport offer, enable its future growth and secure better health and environmental outcomes.
