UK casualties have risen year-on-year for the first time since 2003. This is particularly evident for vulnerable road users including pedestrians and cyclists. Is this due to reduced funding for road safety work, including speed cameras, or physical changes such as guard rail removal?
London has fared better, since overall casualties have continued to fall, but the vulnerable categories have suffered more casualties. Is this because such travel is being encouraged, by hiring out cycles and allowing motor-cycles in bus lanes?
Speakers:
Rob Gifford, Executive Director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety, was adviser to the Transport Committee from 1997 to 2008. Rob will present the national data, the policiesthat may have contributed to it, and the pressures being mounted to get the government to respect the problem.
Ben Johnson (TfL), Senior Delivery Planning Manager at Transport for London, was previously group Manager within TRL Safety Division, and before that managed road safety research in TfL. Ben will present the draft Road Safety Action Plan for London and initial thoughts from stakeholders.
