Clause 950 of the Specification for Highway Works specifies requirements for Surface Preservation Systems. They are proprietary liquid coatings and their use is for extending the life of existing asphalt surfacing, ideally as part of a preventative maintenance programme. However, there are various types of treatment with different functions and recent studies provide a basis for developing new requirements and offer an effective asset management strategy on using them on our roads.

Dr Chibuzor Ojum is a Senior Pavement and Materials Engineer at AECOM. His areas of expertise include research and consultancy in road pavements and materials. He have been involved in providing technical support in consultancy projects, expert reports, research and development for highways, airports and bridge surfacing materials.
His professional interests include innovative asphalt pavements, materials specification, design, evaluation and investigation of pavements, pavement efficiencies and asset management.
Chibuzor completed his PhD in Civil Engineering at the University of Nottingham focusing on sustainable construction materials. Chibuzor obtained his MSc in Management with Merit from Imperial College, London and a MSc in Civil Engineering: Pavement Engineering with Merit from the University of Nottingham of which he was awarded the Worshipful Company of Paviors Prize for the Most Outstanding MSc Research Project in Civil Engineering: Pavement Engineering.
Sunni Samra is the Technical Compliance Manager at ASI Solutions Ltd, having joined as a Technical Development Manager in August 2013, bringing experience from various Technical and Product Development roles at Tarmac, where he had joined as a Graduate (Chemistry BSc (Hons) at the University of Birmingham).
In his current role, he was the first to CE Mark an asphalt preservative and his work has lead him to be involved in projects in Europe and the Middle East.
Sunni has over 12 years’ experience in the industry, covering asphalt mix designs, testing, design, and asphalt preservation.
