Roman Roads – What Can We Learn?
Joint meeting with Bedford Civil Engineering Society.
Date: Wednesday 2nd March 2016
Venue: ARA Social Club, Manton Lane, Bedford, MK41 7PF
Time: 18.00 for 18.30

The Roman road network connected the isolated islands at the edge of the world to a central nervous system of trade and culture that stretched from the colds of Scotland to the salacious luxury of the Arab world, and was a feat unequalled until the Industrial Revolution. The impact of the humble road on the landscapes of Britain remains the most enduring of legacies, yet they are also one of the most enigmatic and mysterious. Through the study of the form and function of these ancient superhighways, it becomes apparent that the roads were the key to the world, and enabled Rome to build an empire.
Paddy Lambert BA (Hons) is an archaeologist with Oxford Archaeology East and specialises in the history and material culture of the Roman world, with specialist interests in late Roman Britain. He has extensively excavated Roman sites in the UK and in France, most recently a high-status rural settlement in Essex and a prestigious Roman villa in Somerset.
