Saving lives through safer roads:

The 4th International Safer Roads Conference will be held in the UK from 19 - 21 May 2014 with the overriding theme of "saving lives through safer roads".

Every six seconds someone is killed or seriously injured on the world's roads resulting in 1.3 million road deaths each year. Whist there is growing awareness of the important role developing nations have to avert the emerging disaster of road accident rates, developed nations cannot be complacent.

In the UK almost 2,000 lives are lost on the roads every year and 2011 saw the first increase in road deaths for nearly a decade, making the Conference theme even more relevant. Despite the increase, the UK remains lower than the European average for all accidents, although studies have suggested the accidents rate for children in the UK is worse than the average for Europe.

The UN Decade of Action for Road Safety was launched in 2011 to urge governments, business leaders and the public to support making roads safer; the 4th Conference will continue to emphasise the importance of the road surface as well as other road safety initiatives in reducing accident rates.

The Conference will explore how the experience and knowledge of engineers from across the globe in the road maintenance and safety sectors can support informed decision making and policy development that improves road safety and efficiency. Delegates will consist of engineers, practitioners, policy makers and other professionals from central and local governments, academics from universities and research organisations, consultants and contractors.
