Sharing our Streets - Launch of DfT's Local Transport Note

Streets provide most of the public space in urban areas.  Well designed streets can be places for recreation, shopping, social interaction and physical activity.  Poorly designed streets can be indifferent or hostile.

Most streets in UK towns and cities have clear demarcation between carriageway and footway.  Although pedestrians and motorists are equally entitled to occupy the carriageway, pedestrians generally exercise little control over vehicular traffic other than at formal crossings.

Shared space represents a different approach - one which seeks to change the way the street operates by reducing the dominance of motor vehicles.  The aim is to allow pedestrians to move more freely within and through the space, crossing where they want to and, in some cases, stopping where they want to.

To support the launch of DfT’s Local Transport Note on Shared Space this conference took place on 4th October and reviewed the document and the research behind it; it investigated a series of case studies that have assisted in the development of the guidance and took delegates on a site visit to shared space project to experience the environment first hand.
