Site visit to the A40 Trunk Road Penblewin to Slebech Park Improvement
Welsh Assembly Government's Trunk Road Forward Programme (TRFP) 2004 identified two major improvement schemes for the A40 trunk road, to meet the principal planning objectives of:
- Providing relief from the effects of community severance in Robeston Wathen and Llanddewi Velfrey
- Improving journey time reliability
- Improving road safety
- Provide improved overtaking opportunity.
The first of these two schemes, the A40 Penblewin - Slebech Park scheme, which incorporates a bypass of Robeston Wathen, is now in the construction phase. The planning objectives will be achieved by the use, for the first time in Wales, of a 2+1 road layout, complying with the new design standard TD70/08.
The scheme features a 2km long bypass of Robeston Wathen with about 1.8km of eastbound overtaking between two new roundabouts, with the A4075 to the east of the existing Canaston Bridge and with the B4314 at the eastern end of the village. A new 38 metre single span bridge over the Eastern Cleddau will carry the trunk road whilst the existing bridge will be retained as a local authority road to allow the existing Llawhaden junction to be closed and linked into the new Canaston Bridge Roundabout. The trunk road west of the river bridge is being widened to provide about 1.5km of westbound overtaking. Both roundabouts would also provide links to Robeston Wathen.
The Welsh Assembly Government will be making an announcement about the second scheme between Penblewin and Llanddewi Velfrey later this year.
