A23 Handcross to Warninglid
22 November 2012, 5pm to 6pm
A23 Handcross to Warninglid Widening
University of Greenwich, Medway Campus, Central Avenue, Chatham Maritime, ME4 4TB
The A23 between Handcross and Warninglid in West Sussex is characterised by steep gradients and sweeping curves, winding among tall and dense woodland – enjoyed by thrill seeking motorists, but hazardous for drivers. This road has had numerous accidents causing massive tailbacks and severe traffic disruption. Now the trees are cleared and major earthworks have started as main contractor Carillion and consultant Jacobs upgrade the 4km stretch of road to modern standards for the Highways Agency. This presents a significant challenge–the project has to be carried out while maintaining two lanes of traffic in both directions at all times.Senior members of the Handcross to Warninglid project team will describe how it will be done and progress so far.
