Structures Lifecycle Planning at Highways England
There is growing recognition of the importance of transport infrastructure for national economic prosperity and quality of life. Efficiently maintaining infrastructure is challenging for all asset owners, who make complex decisions on investment planning and prioritisation of maintenance expenditure. Highways England is utilising the Structures Toolkit (developed by Atkins on behalf of Department of Transport) a Decision Support Tool (DST) called the Structures Investment Tool (SIT) to further its understanding of current maintenance needs and to forecast future maintenance needs for almost 19000 highway structures valued at over £43bn.
The Toolkit DST is a computerised tool allowing asset owners to carry out lifecycle planning, and works prioritisation and allows asset owners to calculate asset value to meet financial reporting obligations. This talk describes the concepts behind the tool kit and illustrates how Highways England has innovatively promoted the use of robust data analysis by working collaboratively with Engineers from Atkins to produce a bespoke refined and configured version of the toolkit developed with increased functionality to meet the requirements of Highways England.
