Can we really have sustainable roads? There are varied views about what form a sustainable transport infrastructure takes. Instead of building and maintaining roads to meet every increasing demand for personal mobility, should we not be trying to change perceptions and behaviours? Understanding our transport demands within local and global sustainability issues such as finite fuel sources, congestion, outputs of harmful emissions and climate change potential requires a change in approach, not only in engineering solutions but in how we invest. In the UK, funds available for transport infrastructure investment have been considerable reduced – but will this positively or negatively affect the priority of sustainability in projects? This presentation will debate the above issues and will appeal to those public and private sector engineers and transport practitioners with an interest in continuing to develop sustainable transport infrastructure within ever competing demands
