This event is jointly held with the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT)
The A483/A489 Newtown Bypass consists of 6.5km of new 2+1 carriageway and 1km of new side roads on the side of the Severn valley to the south of Newtown. Construction began in February 2016 and the bypass was open to traffic in February 2019.
The presentation on the Newtown Bypass will cover a brief history of the scheme including the route selection study, design development and statutory process. The main focus of the presentation will be on the construction stage of the bypass which will include the detailed design, the engineering challenges of moving 2.5 million tonnes of earth and rock with challenging ground conditions and topography and the construction of 11 structures and 17 culverts.
The presentation will also include the health and safety achievements, explain the environmental challenges and mitigation measures that were implemented as well as the economic, social and cultural sustainability benefits that were successfully delivered.
