Location WSP Offices Chancery Lane
Nearest Tube Chancery Lane
Description
The logistics of moving heavy or bulky materials around the country is and always has been complex. Hauliers often rely purely on road transport (ignoring the damage that the increasing numbers of HGVs does to the National Road Infrastructure) There are other options. Railways and Waterways are ideal for moving items in bulk about the country. Of these the waterways are often overlooked or regarded as out of date whereas they are possibly one of the most energy efficient ways of delivering bulk materials. Gerald Heward and Peter Hugman will make the case for making greater use of Britains Industrail Waterways
Speakers Gerald Heward Peter Hugman
Peter Hugman started his inland waterway career in 1978. After a short period working for both passenger and freight companies in the Doncaster area he established South Yorkshire Canal Transport in 1980 which grew to transport over 100,000 tonnes per annum. The company initially transported sand and gravel from the River Trent, then quickly developed new traffics including all the inland waterway traffic from the wharf at New Holland with operations delivering gravel to Knottingley, Newark, Hull and York.
Peter has 15 years experience of working on continental waterways as captain on both freight and passenger ships, culminating with two years operating between Amsterdam and Budapest.
Since establishing BargeConsult Peter has continued to captain vessels on an ad hoc basis to ensure a close contact with practical vessel developments and to complement his continuing professional development. He is the Financial Officer of the Commercial Boat Operators Association (CBOA) and a Member of the Institute of Logistics and Transport.
Gerald Heward is the Commercial Director of an SME, Wood, Hall & Heward Ltd, who provide floating plant, equipment and personnel to contractors working on the UK’s rivers and canals.
Prior to setting up WHH Ltd in 1997, Gerald had previously worked for T&D Murrell who operated freight barges on the canals in London and the Thames and short sea shipping coasters around the south east and near continent. Typical cargoes included lime juice, grain, steel and aggregates.
Gerald gained his MBA from Henley Business School in 1989 and is now a Visiting Fellow at both Henley Business School and Oxford Brookes Business School teaching on their MBA programmes.
Gerald is a member of the Freight by Water Group of the FTA and a London Waterways Commissioner.
