Subject:The Mayor for London's Airport Strategy
With Shamal Ratnayaka, Principal Transport Planner - Aviation, Transport for London
Few transport issues are as politically sensitive, economically vital or so as intractable as aviation expansion. Now back firmly on the agenda, depending on your perspective the Government either is taking the issue seriously or is desperate for it to go away. This talk will explain why the problem won’t go away, what the Mayor has been doing to make sure it won’t go away and what conclusions we can draw from the pronouncements of the Airport Commission to date. The talk will give a flavour of the range of transport, environmental and economic factors that are shaping the debate and that could ultimately determine the outcome
Shamal Ratnayaka works for Transport for London, with responsibility for long-term planning of transport infrastructure. Projects he has previously worked on include Crossrail 2, High Speed Two and the Mayor's Transport Strategy. He is now facing perhaps his biggest challenge yet, taking on aviation strategy and planning for a new airport for London. This has included preparation of the Mayoral submissions to the Airports Commission over the course of 2013.
