Fifty years have passed since Colin Buchanan published his landmark report ‘Traffic in Towns’ which set out a bold new approach to transport planning. To celebrate the anniversary, his grandson Paul, a technical director with SKM Colin Buchanan, will repeat the CIHT Learned Society Lecture, first given in London in April 2013, for the Branch.

The presentation will cover a retrospective view of Traffic in Towns, what did it get right and what did it get wrong? What was the background to the report and what influence did it have on transport and planning over the last 50 years? How does the approach put forward in Traffic in Towns compare with current policies?

Paul will also talk about Transport in Cities, a 50 year update of Traffic in Towns, currently in preparation. That will adopt a more global perspective and looks at what issues will be facing cities over the next 30-50 years and how their transport strategies and planning and economic policies can best deliver policy objectives.

Those attending may claim CPD – a certificate will be issued following the event.
