Event Background:
In February 2014, Brighton University and the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation will present a unique opportunity to gain an insight into the political and engineering challenges of transport in a modern city.
Councillor Ian Davey, deputy leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, will be at Brighton University to present a summary of two and a half years’ of transport developments in Brighton, with his hopes for the next phase of change for the city’s roads and streets. Alongside councillor Davey will be the council’s head of transport, civil engineer Mark Prior, who will describe the specific engineering aimed at the council’s targets.
Like many cities in Britain, Brighton & Hove faces the various demands of commuters, local communities, businesses and transport service providers. The city council has been working to accommodate their needs within a policy mix of aims to improve safety and local environments while increasing provision for sustainable transport – cycling, walking and bus use.
The Green Party gained majority leadership of Brighton & Hove Council in May 2011.Transport projects developed since then have included extension of bus and cycle lanes and parking enforcement, with latest plans to introduce 20mph speed limits across the city – but not without objection from some stakeholders.
Councillor Davey will mark progress so far, with reflections on achievements and where the council has had to compromise or scale back its plans. Design of each and every project has to consider many political and engineering factors. Mark Prior will present a flavour of the challenge being tackled by the city’s engineers.
