Scotland’s worst gridlock in living memory occurred on the Monday 6th December 2010 as heavy snow fell during what was already a prolonged and extremely cold period. Hundreds of people were trapped in their vehicles for extended periods and part of the M8, the country’s busiest road, was closed for over 48 hours.

The presentation will cover Transport Scotland’s proactive response and implementation of lessons learned following the introduction of the Six Point Plan which was launched on the 14th December 2010 to improve winter resilience.

Stewart will also talk about building on the Six Point Plan and further operational enhancements which have been taken forward over the past few years to better prepare for future winters. This will focus on the three key areas of winter maintenance; management and decision making, treatment and communication with road users.
