Britain has some of the safest roads in the world, but road deaths and serious injuries increased by 17% in the first three months of 2014 compared with the same period the previous year. Figures of Killed and Seriously Injured have been falling for many years so is this a blip ?
Kit Mitchell will discuss:
- trends in road casualties in Britain
- how Britain compares with other countries
- who is involved in accidents
- factors contributing to casualties
- a look to the future
He will also discuss cycling and safety and the benefits of greater segregation from other forms of road traffic.
Dr Mitchell worked at the British Transport Research Laboratory from 1970 until he retired in 1994. He became Head of Access and Mobility Division in 1975, which included research on ways to improve conditions for pedal cyclists. From 1982 he ran the Environment Division. .
After retiring from TRL, he worked for Transport Canada for nine months as a Visiting Expert on the implications of Intelligent Transport Systems for older and disabled travellers. He was a member of the TRB task force that updated a report on transportation for an ageing society. He was co-chair of the TRB Committee on Accessible Transportation and Mobility 2004-10, and a member of the TRB Committee on the Safe Mobility of Older Persons. He has become increasingly involved in the safety of older drivers and, more recently, in general road safety. In spring 2014 he and Richard Allsop produced a report for PACTS projecting likely road casualty numbers to 2030.
