Subject: Virtual Street Design: ‘seeing’ the public realm design before it is built.
A successful public realm scheme would not only achieve its road or ‘link’ function, but it is equally important that the design complements the nature, history and ‘place’ function of the surrounding street environment. However, the ‘look and feel’ of the design in relation to the streetscape can be difficult to understand from traditional 2D drawings. Moreover, visualisations are normally commissioned on a ‘charge per shot’ basis, giving people just a ‘snapshot’ of selective locations rather than the full picture of the scheme.
Virtual Street Design is a new approach initiated by Atkins, emphasising on the integration of the design and visualisation processes. By taking advantages of technologies including Laser Scanning, game engine Unity and Virtual Reality (VR), we are able to develop a realistic and technically accurate 3D virtual street model that can be used for both design and visualisation purposes. This enables us to truly ‘see’ the proposed street scene in a natural way – from first person view in a realistic 3D environment, that we can freely navigate to any location and any view point of our choice.
We believe that by enabling project teams, stakeholders and the public to have better understanding of the design, informed decisions can be made at an earlier point in the project lifecycle, improving the efficiency of the design development. This will drive the quality and cost effectiveness of the project and ultimately help deliver quality spaces that will be visited and enjoyed by many.
Speakers: Chris Greenwood (Atkins), John Agar (MSA), Cedric Kwok (Atkins)
Chris Greenwood is a Director of City Spaces in Atkins and has lead and delivered a variety of public realm and streetscape enhancement schemes including the pedestrianisation of Trafalgar Square and Oxford Circus diagonal crossing. Chris will give an overview of the Virtual Street Design approach and how it will impact the public realm industry.
John Agar is a Managing Director of MSA. John will explain the laser scanning technology and discuss the merits of it in comparison with the conversional topographical survey method.
Cedric Kwok is a Chartered Engineer specialising in urban highways and public realm projects. Cedric will discuss the applications of Virtual Street Design throughout the project lifecycle and demonstrate various outputs of virtual street model using recent schemes that have been trialled in central London.
