Led by CIHT South West's Exeter Emerging Professionals Group, this webinar will consider the relationship between transport and personal wellbeing. It will also explore the impact of COVID-19 and changing travel patterns on this relationship.
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we work and our patterns of travel. This webinar will consider the relationship between transport and personal wellbeing, asking the questions, “What might we be missing out on?”.
This webinar will include two presentations from Chris Burridge-Barney and Dr Ben Clark of the University of the West of England.
Emerging Professional Chris Burridge-Barney will present his research on the value of Devon’s subsidised bus network. This research, based on surveys and interviews with bus users, looks at its impacts such as reduced social exclusion. Chris will show that the availability of bus services can have a significant impact on physical and mental wellbeing. This result was found particularly among older age groups and lower income groups. His research argues that, despite a reduction in demand, subsidised bus services continue to have a significant social and economic value in rural counties.
Dr Ben Clark, University of the West of England, will outline his findings from the Commuting and Wellbeing study which used data from Understanding Society. The Understanding Society Study is an annual panel survey of 50,000 UK households. The study examined the effects of commuting time, commuting mode and working from home on personal wellbeing. Dr Clark will also look at the relevance of the findings for policy making across transport, planning, housing and employment sectors.
This event is aim at anyone involved in planning and delivery transport strategy and intervention.
Applicable to all job role / levels within the Transport Planning and Public Transport sectors.
Ben is a Senior Lecturer working in the Centre for Transport & Society with a background in transport planning practice. Ben's research is motivated by an interest in how transport systems and their use can support the creation of urban environments that are: (i) healthy; (ii) low carbon / low emissions; (iii) equitable; and (iv) culturally / economically vibrant. He teaches all aspects of transport planning and engineering on undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.
Chris Burridge-Barney lives in Crediton, Devon and is an Assistant Transport Planner at Devon County Council, where he has worked for 3 years.
