Y&H Cudworth & West Green Bypass Barnsley

In 2011 Barnsley Council’s Highways & Engineering Department and VHE Construction won the John Smeaton Trophy (Best Highways & Transportation Scheme in the Region) for their joint submission on the Cudworth & West Green Bypass - an excellent example of a major scheme which was designed and constructed to meet local needs and national aspirations.

The presentation will provide the history of how the scheme, which was first muted in the 1950s, was developed. How the necessary funding was secured and how the project was procured. How Barnsley Council and VHE (the contractor) worked in partnership to minimise the impact of the scheme on the local community and to protect the local environment. Specific road safety features were incorporated into the design as well as facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.

The NEC3 Option C contract was used to incentivise and encourage value engineering. Particular attention was given to health, safety and welfare of all site personnel, visitors and the local community.

Why not join us so you can hear and see more about this innovative project.
