Y&H Cycling Design and Desire Lines

Tim Pheby has worked in transport and cycling in the private, local authority and voluntary sectors for nearly 30 years. Studying an MSc in Transport Planning he did his project on methods of timing cyclists. He was a campaigner for the London Cycling Campaign in the 1980’s before a 15 year career in local government with Camden, Cambridgshire and York.  His main achievements have been introducing Speed Cushions into the UK through on-road trials, implementing some of the first 20mph zones in England and winning a Prince Michael of Kent Road Safety Award for the “Magic Roundabout” in York. Tim was the Cycling Coordinator for Yorkshire and the Humber with the English Cycling Development Team and, with Transport Initiatives, was a member of Cycling England’s Professional support team.  He is now an independent consultant based in York.

Using photos Tim will show some of the best and worst cycling schemes he has come across in 6 years of auditing cycling schemes in the UK.  He will look cyclist’s desire lines (where they want to go) and the design line (where the designer thinks they should go).  The presentation will be structured on the Hierarchy of Provision which is the design process outlined in the English Department for Transport’s Cycling Infrastructure Design Guide Local Transport Note 2/08.
