Members, Fellows, Associates, Graduates, Apprentices and Part Time Students keen on doing more to help represent their profession and promote the standing of the Institution are strongly encouraged to put their names forward as CIHT Council members.
In June 2022 there will be three vacancies for Ordinary Members of Council.
Council advises on the strategic and professional direction of the Institution, so by becoming a Council member you will be able to play an important role in shaping the future of the Institution for many years to come.
Being a Council Member is a job to be taken seriously, however it is also an enjoyable and rewarding experience, offering you the opportunity to give something back to the profession, and to meet and network with some interesting people.
Karen McShane, newly elected Council member, explains why she decided to put herself forward for election:
“This year I was asked by my Regional CIHT Committee to stand for election to Council and I thought what value can I add to such a great organisation? An Institution represents all our members, but it can only do that if our members participate and discuss the issues that impact on them and their working environment. I took the opportunity to ensure that my beliefs of a more equal and diverse workforce together with ensuring that CPD is freely available for all our members are taken on board by the Council. I have been truly blessed to debate these issues with such an enthusiastic group of Board members and staff and I have ensured that the views of members are taken into consideration. Members ask me what does my Institution do for me? to which I respond it is your institution and it takes on board your views, have you taken an opportunity to articulate your views to your Institution? If not, why not?”
Richard Llewellyn, also a newly elected Council members, says:
"I have been a member of CIHT since I was a student, and the institution has supported my development throughout my career. I have served on my regional committee for nearly ten years, including the role of chair. Through committee activities I was exposed to the wider workings of the institution including regular visits to Britannia Walk and meeting the officers there. Putting myself forward to be considered as an ordinary council member seemed a natural next step towards giving back to the institution and its membership at a higher level.
Being elected to CIHT Council has opened opportunities to promote my key passions of education and professional development. I believe this is one of the most important activities of a professional institution. Not only has serving on Council itself brought the chance to contribute to the institution’s strategy, it has also resulted further opportunities to join other boards and panels as a Council member. In this regard, in addition to my role on the Board of Trustees, I’m also very proud to be serving as chair of the new Education and Skills Strategy Board.
Serving as a Council member has enabled me to meet a new group of fellow professionals with a diverse range of backgrounds and interests. My network has been strengthened and almost without fail I learn something new about different parts of our industry every time we meet. Similarly, mentoring and support from the President, Vice-President and the various Board chairs have strengthened my own leadership skills such as defining goals, solving problems, seeking different perspectives, and supporting others.
I would wholeheartedly commend anyone considering Council membership to step forward and join in. I am sure you will find the experience a rewarding one."
