Since 2022, when CIHT launched its educational service CIHT Learn, huge progress has been made on the platform and a vast range of members have benefitted from its resources. Currently, there are 140 learning experiences available on the platform, with over 20,000 enrolments and more than 5,000 people completing courses in the past four years.
In the past 12 months, CIHT Learn has continued to expand the breadth of its learning across the highways, transportation and infrastructure sector, with 30 learning experiences launched in 2026, including 15 courses. Those courses range from ‘Build Your Career – From Insight to Action’ and ‘Horse Riders as Road Users’ to ‘Environmental Roadside Grassland Management’ and an ‘Introduction to Bus Franchising’.
“Taken together, the new additions demonstrate the breadth of the CIHT Learn offer,” says Carrie Playford, digital learning and content manager at CIHT. “They cover highways maintenance, buses, freight, sustainable development, climate resilience, active travel, placemaking and professional development.”
Winning a prestigious Memcom Excellence Award for Best Education Initiative in 2026, CIHT Learn is a central part of the CIHT offer, with members receiving free access to standard courses, alongside webinars and specialist content such as learning developed through the Bus Centre of Excellence.
One particularly successful course this year was Preventative Highways Maintenance Fundamentals, which was created to help transport professionals understand new Department for Transport measures put in place to ensure that English local authority funding made available for highways maintenance is used for its original intention and not shifted into other budgets.
The course was developed in response to a defined sector need, and by October 2026, 67% of its learners were new to CIHT, demonstrating the power of CIHT Learn to reach new audiences as well as support existing members.
Across the platform, CIHT members continue to benefit from learning opportunities designed for a broad range of professionals, whether they are seasoned executives or just starting out in the industry. For those still in full-time education or in their first role, career-development education linked to CIHT’s emerging professionals activity, specialist technical learning and courses for apprentices are all available.
However, there’s more to CIHT than its range of courses and learning opportunities. During 2026, an updated CIHT Learn quality assurance process was approved, which provides a structured approach that covers the development and approval of learning objectives, storyboard review, content development, quality review and final sign-off.
And since the platform is constantly developing, with new learning experiences being created and added every month, 2027 promises to be another busy year. Plans include developing the annual pipeline of member-value learning, alongside priorities such as Supervisor Skills Level 3 and a new digital Road Safety Audit learning product. There will also be up to six new technical courses, all free to CIHT members, with new webinars being regularly recorded and uploaded.
