Preferred routes have been announced for dualling three sections of the A47; one of East Anglia’s most important highway corridors.

 

Dualling will take place between North Tuddenham and Easton to the west of Norwich, between Blofield and North Burlingham to the east of the city and between the A1 at Wansford and Sutton near Peterborough.

 

Work will also see several junctions and roundabouts improved at a further three sites on the road linking Peterborough with Great Yarmouth. Upgrades will take place at the Thickthorn interchange with the A11 near Norwich, at two busy junctions in Great Yarmouth and at the Guyhirn junction with the A141 near March. In all the improvements to the A47 are valued at around £300M.

 

Highways England’s A47 programme leader Philip Davie said: “We have listened to the public’s views and these have helped shape and inform our approach to our proposed schemes.

 

“Work now continues, adding detail to the design for each of the dualling and junction improvements, and on planning how we will deliver them in a way that keeps traffic moving.”

 

Dualling between North Tuddenham and Easton will follow ‘option two’, seeing the A47 improved along its existing route. From Blofield to North Burlingham ‘option four’ was selected, where a new stretch of dual carriageway will be built to the south of the existing alignment. And from Wansford to Sutton ‘option two’ was preferred, where new alignment will be built both to the north and south of the A47.

 

Subject to statutory processes, work on the six projects could begin as early as March 2020, with completion dates starting from March 2021.
