The event, held at Glasgow Green, provided attendees with a hands-on opportunity to test a range of adaptive and non-standard bikes — including trikes, cargo bikes and fixed-wheel models — as well as develop practical cycling skills. With a strong focus on accessibility and inclusive design, participants also took part in a relaxed group ride around the park’s traffic-free paths, guided by qualified leaders from Sunny Cycles.
Sunny Cycles, the local charity delivering the workshop, is known for its commitment to making cycling open to everyone, regardless of age, ability or background. Their mission to break down barriers to cycling resonated throughout the session, which was open to beginners and seasoned cyclists alike.
The skills workshop covered core techniques such as using gears, signalling, lifting a hand off the handlebars, group riding, and navigating junctions. Attendees — many of whom work in planning, engineering, or policy — were encouraged to reflect on how infrastructure and street design can better accommodate a wider range of cycle types, particularly those used by people with disabilities or mobility challenges.
The workshop concluded with informal networking at West on the Green, giving participants the chance to connect with peers across the transport and active travel sectors.
This unique event highlighted not only the value of practical cycling experience for transport professionals, but also the importance of inclusive thinking in active travel infrastructure design. Feedback from participants praised the hands-on nature of the session and the welcoming, supportive environment created by the Sunny Cycles team.
