The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) welcomed 25 members of the CIHT Qatar Group on Saturday 10 February 2018 for a presentation and a walking tour of Al Wakrah Stadium. The stadium will host matches during the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ through to the quarter-final stages.

The SC’s Project Manager at Al Wakrah Stadium, Thani Al Zarraa, gave an informed presentation to the group explaining the stadium and precinct is being constructed by a joint venture with MPS (MIDMAC, PORR Qatar and Six Construct).

Eng. Zarraa stated: “This project is not only to host the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, as it is foreseen that it will have greater positive impact on the beyond the tournament.”

The stadium, inspired by Qatar’s traditional dhow boats, will have a capacity of 40,000 during the tournament and will be reduced to 20,000 in legacy mode. The site will also boast gyms, a swimming pool, basketball courts, restaurants, retail and a wedding hall which will make it a significant community landmark for Al Wakrah.

The stadium is some 15km south of Doha and will be connected to the city via the new metro line and feeder buses. The site will also be well-connected with the two major highways immediately adjacent to the stadium. There will be four bus stops within 240m from the main gate as well as bicycle lanes and racks within the site.

A large amount of traffic and pedestrian modelling has been completed to ensure the smooth operation of the stadium in different situations, for example, during pre-match arrival, at half time, and after the game; not just for spectators but also for officials, members of the press and VIPs.

The Group was then taken on a site visit around the stadium viewing the impressive structures being built. Main contractor works will be completed in 2018.

The attendees enjoyed the opportunity to see the exciting and challenging project close up and many questions were asked throughout the visit to enrich their understanding and knowledge of this unique project.

CIHT Qatar is sponsored by AECOM, DCE, Egis, Fugro, PAF, Seero, TMS and WSP.
