131211_Gloustershire_224Gloucestershire County Council has announced Amey as the preferred bidder for a contract worth up to £450M to deliver highways services across the county.

Amey saw off competition from incumbent contractor Skanska, Balfour Beatty supported by Halcrow and a Ringway / Jacobs joint venture.

The new five year road management and maintenance contract will begin on 1 April and has the potential to run for up to 11 years. Gloucestershire has nearly 10,000km of local roads and the contract includes provision of winter maintenance services and delivery of highway improvement schemes.

Gloucestershire's cabinet member for highways Vernon Smith said: “I am grateful to officers and fellow members of the cross-party working group for their painstaking evaluation of the bids which resulted in a clear recommendation to cabinet.

“I am confident that in Amey we have appointed a highways contractor that will provide the quality services our county deserves as well as value for money for Gloucestershire’s tax payers."

Amey already provides services for Gloucester City Council including street cleaning. The company's chief executive Mel Ewell added: “We will draw on our existing footprint in the local area along with our national highways experience to provide high quality, yet cost efficient services for the county."

Major highway contracts already secured by Amey this year include agreements with Liverpool City Council, Transport Scotland and the Highways Agency for its Asset Support Contracts in areas six and eight.

♦ Work to improve the M1 at Junction 19 (the Catthorpe Interchange) was given the go ahead today.

Starting in January, the £190M scheme will see the existing junction replaced with a three level junction and local roads improved. Direct free flow links between the A14, M1 and M6 will be introduced and local traffic will soon be able to avoid the intersection.

Skanska is the contractor and the scheme designer is Jacobs.
