Greater efforts need to be made to persuade young people that apprenticeships offer a worthwhile route into employment, according to a new survey.

Consultant AECOM found that one in three of its apprentices said a misperception that apprenticeships are an inferior route into the industry represents the biggest barrier to attracting good candidates.

A similar number claimed that many good candidates do not consider apprenticeships as they view them as inferior to degrees. And one in four said that schools do not provide sufficient information about apprenticeships.

The company’s UK managing director of transportation Paul McCormick, who began his career as an apprentice, said: "I know first hand that apprenticeships are a proven, viable route into the infrastructure and built environment sector.

“More needs to be done, however, to convince good candidates that apprenticeships offer a meaningful and rewarding career path.”

CIHT chief executive Sue Percy said that apprenticeships are a great way to learn new skills, gain valuable work experience and become qualified while earning a wage. She also reminded the transportation sector that CIHT offers an apprentice membership grade, suitable for all apprentices working in highways and transportation.

“National Apprenticeship Week provides an opportunity for us to highlight all those involved in promoting and supporting this great initiative,” she added.
