Improvement to one of the busiest sections of road in east Yorkshire is to be carried out by Balfour Beatty. The contractor secured a £75M design and build deal with the Highways Agency to upgrade a 1.5km stretch of the A63 Castle Street in Hull.
Construction could begin in 2016 and will involve the conversion of a major interchange into a new split level junction. This will see a two lane dual carriageway carrying east-west traffic lowered below north-south traffic in a new 400m underpass.
The scheme will also include the construction of three new bridges linking the south and north of the city for pedestrians and cyclists.
When complete the road upgrade is expected to improve access to the Port of Hull, relieve congestion and improve safety on the route.
Roads Minister John Hayes said: “Hull’s drivers, pedestrians and cyclists will see dramatic and positive changes to their journeys.”
Balfour Beatty is also set to manage detailed design and development and assist with statutory consultations for the improvements as part of the Early Contractor Involvement scheme.
The firm saw off competition from a BAM Nuttall/Morgan Sindall joint venture, Carillion, Costain and Laing O’Rourke to win the job.
Balfour Beatty Construction Services UK chief executive Nicholas Pollard said: “This award to improve journey times on the main route through Hull builds upon our extensive experience of successful delivery of ECI contracts.”
