Protesters campaigning against a proposed link road between Hastings and Bexhill in East Sussex have vowed to remain on site despite sub zero temperatures and the loss of two of their three camps to bailiffs. Around 20 protesters are currently at the ‘Decoy Pond’ camp with some in tree houses reportedly chaining themselves to concrete blocks hoisted up off the ground.
“Morale is very good despite the weather,” said protester Adrian from the group Combe Haven Defenders. “We have continued local support and are grateful for the firewood, food and sleeping bags that have been donated. We expect bailiffs to return later this week.”
Recent reports that the site had been cleared of the protesters were premature. Activists ensconced in tunnels have been removed and parts of the 5km route have been fenced off by security guards. But more tunnels are said to be under construction and some hardy protesters are “climbing very high” into the trees to avoid capture.
“Our tactics are changing and everyone here considers the occupation of the trees to be part of a first phase,” Adrian continued. “Once the trees are gone we will move to a different strategy.”
Complaints that security staff have been heavy handed with protesters have been tempered by the revelation that the site’s most famous occupier known as ‘Sitting Bull’ was allowed out of his tunnel at night, only to return at dawn. Paramedics were said to be concerned for his welfare so a “gentlemanly agreement” about his sleeping arrangements were accepted by both sides before the protester was finally evicted.
A spokesman for East Sussex County Council said the road is needed to improve the economy of Hastings and the surrounding area. But while protesters are making their voices heard their actions have yet to delay the scheme. Site clearance is due to finish in March and the road remains on course to open in April 2015, the council spokesman said.
